Meta's Online Editor comes with a comprehensive list of available keyboard shortcut commands available via the Options/Shortcuts menu.

There are a set of default shortcuts already assigned but you can customise these and add new ones. By assigning commonly used functions to shortcuts, users can save time navigating through the different modules and functionalities, thus reducing the need to constantly switch between the keyboard and mouse.

Changing default Keyboard Shortcuts

You can use combinations of Ctrl, Alt and Shift with certain keys but be careful that you don’t use a combination in use by your operating system (e.g. Windows/Mac)

If you choose a combination which is already in use, you will see a warning dialog at the bottom of screen.

To change a shortcut which is already assigned, click in the left-hand column and press your preferred key combination.

The middle column allows you to specify if the shortcut should be used only when a text field is active or all the time.

The right-hand column states what the action will do.

The row of buttons starting with “Show all” allows you to filter the type of action to make it easier to navigate the list.

Add a new Shortcut

To add a shortcut, press the “+” (top left of screen). This opens another screen with all the actions available to have shortcuts assigned to them.

  1. Choose an action
  2. Choose a condition
  3. Click in the ‘Type in keys’ box and press your key combination

You can assign the same type of shortcut to multiple key combinations with different parameters.

For instance, to create different special characters you can use the “Insert text” shortcut more than once.

  1. Select ‘Insert text’
  2. Select condition
  3. Click in the ‘Type in keys’ box and press your key combination
  4. Click in the ‘Value’ box and type the character you would like to insert
  5. Press [Submit]
  6. Repeat 1-5 and use a different key combination for a different special character
  7. When you go back to the main shortcuts screen and press [Insert text] you will see a list of the new shortcuts.

Review Keyboard Shortcuts

We advise that when you first get access to the Meta Online Editor, you review and familiarise yourself with these shortcut commands and edit any that you would like to be changed. This will make the translation and review process as simple and easy as possible.

Delete

This allows you to delete the selected Shortcut.

Download Keyboard Shortcuts file - Importable JSON

When you are happy with your shortcut settings, we advise you to download the JSON file for safe keeping. You may wish to email these to yourself, so you always have access if needed. On the main shortcuts screen, press 'Download shortcut settings'. To load shortcuts from a saved file, press 'Open file from disc' menu.

Download Keyboard Shortcuts file - Readable CSV (Excel)

You can also export a human-readable CSV file of your shortcuts. You will not be able to reimport this file type, but can be useful if you would like to reference your shortcuts outside of the Online Editor.
On the main shortcuts screen, press 'Download shortcut settings', and select 'Readable CSV'.

You can open this file with Excel - however, for better visibility, you may wish to tweak the format.

Once you open the downloaded CSV file, open in Excel. Select Column A; under the Data tab; select Text to Columns; then Delimited; uncheck Tab; and select Semi-Colon; then Finish.

Open file from disc

This menu allows you to browse to a locally saved Shortcuts JSON file.

Load Default

This will reset the Keyboard Shortcuts to their default values.

When pressed an alert will pop up warning you that this can't be undone. Only confirm this if you are certain you wish to overwrite your custom shortcuts to the defaults.
